Meeting in Mexico City

How to attract high-profile individuals to teaching? How to effectively establish a teaching staff that enhances learning outcomes with its quality. And once inside the school, how should the teaching career be designed to retain those high-profile individuals?

These concerns brought together teachers and relevant actors from different educational systems at the same table for three days, from May 3rd to May 5th. During the meeting, the challenges of the teaching career for the coming years were analysed.

The most prominent topics of the meeting were: evidence-based decision-making, teaching career, digital skills, teacher training, and teacher quality and appreciation.

Meeting in

Buenos Aires, Argentina

In September, we participated of the third Congress of International Experiences in Teacher Professional Development organised by the Ministry of Education of the City of Buenos Aires together with the Coalition and the Organization of Ibero-American States.

Held at the Legislature of the City of Buenos Aires, the congress brought together various stakeholders from the educational world to reflect on the motivations behind choosing the teaching profession and its link to the generation of educational policies aimed at attracting to the career: academia, public policy makers, opinion leaders, teachers, and educational organizations.

In addition, the Coalition held a private agenda with working meetings to go forward the various projects and research it promotes in the region.

Study on teacher motivations

In light of some international reports regarding the increasing need for teachers in the coming years (IDB, 2019; IDB, 2020; previously UNESCO / OREALC, 2012), as well as the importance of understanding their motivation when entering the profession - to comprehend variables related to their choice, completion of studies, and sustenance in the exercise of the profession - the Ministry of Education of the City of Buenos Aires, in partnership with the Latin American Coalition for Teacher Excellence and the OEI, sought to understand the motivations of those entering the teaching profession at the primary level in state-managed schools, with the ultimate goal of generating inputs that can help identify and promote strategies to attract individuals to the teaching profession.

This "exploratory study on the motivations behind the choice of a primary school teaching career" aimed at the analysis of the motivation of the population of incoming students to primary school teacher training programs in state-managed institutions in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires. It is an exploratory study based on the responses obtained from the population defined by the first year of primary education teacher training at State-managed Teacher Training Institutes.
